What is MCP Template?

MCP Template is a CLI tool that generates a starter project for building MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers using the FastMCP framework. It provides a preconfigured TypeScript project with dual transport support (stdio and HTTP), sample definitions for tools, resources, and prompts, and development scripts. It is intended for developers who want to quickly create their own MCP servers.

How to use MCP Template?

Run npx @mcpdotdirect/create-mcp-server or npm init @mcpdotdirect/mcp-server to scaffold a new project. Then install dependencies with your preferred package manager and start the server using npm start (stdio mode) or npm run start:http (HTTP mode). Development modes with auto‑reload are available via npm run dev and npm run dev:http.

Set the PORT environment variable before starting the HTTP server, for example: PORT=8080 npm run start:http.

How do I test the server during development?

Use FastMCP’s built‑in tools: npx fastmcp dev server.js or npx fastmcp inspect server.ts.

Can I use Node.js instead of Bun?

Yes. The default scripts use Bun, but you can modify the package.json scripts to use Node.js or another runtime of your choice.
