What is Google-Research-MCP?

A standalone Windows MCP server that gives Claude Google search and web research capabilities, powered by SerpAPI. It ships as a single self-contained .exe — no Node.js, npm, or external runtime required.

How to use Google-Research-MCP?

Download the pre-built google-research-mcp.exe, place it permanently, and configure your MCP client (e.g., Claude Desktop) with the SERPAPI_KEY environment variable in the env block. Restart the client to expose the tools. Optionally run init to install bundled skills and agents into ~/.claude.

A SerpAPI account (free tier: 100 searches/month) and Windows 10/11 (64-bit). No other runtime is required.

How do I get a SerpAPI key?

What transport modes are available?

Two modes: `stdio` (default, used by Claude Desktop and Claude Code) and `http` (for clients like LM Studio). Set the `MCP_TRANSPORT` environment variable to `http` and optionally the `PORT` (default 3030).

Is the HTTP mode secure?

The HTTP transport binds to `0.0.0.0` and the `/mcp` endpoint is not authenticated. Only enable it on a trusted network or behind a firewall; stdio mode is not network-exposed.

What should I do if I see a “429 Too Many Requests” error?

You have hit your SerpAPI plan’s rate limit. The free plan allows 100 searches per month; consider upgrading or waiting until the limit resets.
