What is NPILayer?

NPILayer is a remote MCP server that gives AI assistants deterministic U.S. healthcare provider data from the official CMS NPPES dataset, updated weekly. Ask your assistant to look up an NPI, find providers by name or specialty, or list providers near a ZIP code, and it answers from real NPPES records instead of guessing.

Tools

Tool	What it does
lookup_npi	Look up one provider or organization by 10-digit NPI: name, credential, status (active/deactivated), primary taxonomy, practice address
search_providers	Search by name, organization, city, state, ZIP, NUCC taxonomy code, or plain-language specialty ("cardiology")
providers_near	Providers within a radius of a ZIP code or lat/lng, sorted by distance

All tools are read-only.

Access and limits

• lookup_npi and search_providers work without an account (rate-limited per IP).
• providers_near and higher limits need a free NPILayer account (OAuth sign-in or API key).

About the data

Geographic search uses ZIP-code centroids, so distances are approximate. Provider information is based on publicly available NPPES data. An NPI does not indicate licensure, credentialing, network participation, or current practice status.
