概要

What is Cloudant MCP Server by CData?

Cloudant MCP Server by CData is a read-only Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that enables large language models (LLMs) such as Claude Desktop to query live Cloudant data using natural language. It wraps the CData JDBC Driver for Cloudant, exposing Cloudant as relational SQL models and making data available through a simple MCP interface without requiring SQL knowledge.

How to use Cloudant MCP Server by CData?

Clone the repository, build the JAR with mvn clean install, install and license the CData JDBC Driver for Cloudant, create a .prp file with connection details (Prefix, ServerName, JdbcUrl, etc.), then configure Claude Desktop’s claude_desktop_config.json to run the JAR with the .prp file. The server uses stdio transport and runs on the same machine as the client.

Key features of Cloudant MCP Server by CData

  • Provides live, read-only queries of Cloudant data via MCP
  • Uses the CData JDBC Driver to model Cloudant as relational SQL
  • Exposes get_tables, get_columns, and run_query tools
  • Supports natural language question answering by the LLM
  • Outputs data in CSV format with column headers
  • Requires Java and the CData JDBC Driver to be installed

Use cases of Cloudant MCP Server by CData

  • Let an LLM answer business questions about Cloudant data (e.g., “How many open tickets?”)
  • Enable read-only data exploration in Claude Desktop without writing SQL
  • Provide a natural language query interface for Cloudant databases
  • Integrate Cloudant data into AI-driven analytics workflows

FAQ from Cloudant MCP Server by CData

Is this server read-only or does it support write operations?

This project is explicitly a read-only MCP server. For full read, write, update, delete, and action capabilities, CData offers a separate free beta MCP Server for Cloudant with simplified setup.

What dependencies are required to run the server?

You need Java (to run the JAR), the CData JDBC Driver for Cloudant installed and licensed, and a client such as Claude Desktop on the same machine.

Where does the data live and how is it accessed?

Data lives in Cloudant and is accessed via a JDBC connection string configured in the .prp file. The server does not store data locally.

What transport does the server use?

The server uses stdio transport, so it can only be used with MCP clients running on the same machine as the server.

How do I authenticate to Cloudant?

Authentication is handled by the CData JDBC Driver’s connection string (e.g., InitiateOAuth=GETANDREFRESH). For OAuth-based sources, the driver will prompt for browser authentication during connection testing.
