Best MCP Servers in 2026: 25 Picks by Category, Official First

Oct 15, 2026MCP.so TeamMCP.so Team

The best MCP servers in 2026 by category: dev tools, browser automation, databases, productivity, search, design and observability, with verified remote URLs.

The best MCP servers in 2026 are the official ones from tools you already use: GitHub, Playwright, Supabase, Notion, Atlassian, Linear, Sentry and Figma, plus a search server such as Exa or Firecrawl and a docs server such as Context7. Most of them now run as hosted remote servers with OAuth, so setup is a URL and a sign-in. Below are 25 picks by category, each labeled local or remote, with the endpoint checked against the vendor's own docs in October 2026.

This list is for developers and technical teams. If you run sales or marketing, read Best MCP Servers for Sales and Marketing instead — it covers HubSpot, Salesforce, Airtable and Canva in depth.

How We Picked

The mcp.so directory lists tens of thousands of servers. Most are weekend wrappers. A server made this list only if it met all of these:

  1. Maintained by the vendor, or the clear community standard. Official servers come first. Where a community server is the only good option, we say so.
  2. Actively maintained in 2026. Several servers that older "top MCP" lists still recommend, such as Puppeteer, have been archived by the MCP project. We left them out.
  3. Remote option when possible. A hosted endpoint with OAuth means no API keys in config files and no local runtime. See Remote MCP Servers Guide for why that matters.
  4. Scoped permissions. Read-only modes, toolsets or project scoping, so you can give an agent less than full access.
  5. Useful in a daily loop. Every pick solves a job people actually hand to an agent: open a PR, read an error, query a table, check a design.

Most of these servers are free to connect; you pay for the underlying service. Details are in Are MCP Servers Free?.

Developer Tools

GitHub

GitHub's official server lets an agent read code, open and review pull requests, triage issues, check Actions runs and read security alerts. It is on this list because it is the one server almost every coding agent needs, and because its toolsets (repos, issues, pull_requests, actions, code_security and more) let you switch off what you don't use. The hosted endpoint is https://api.githubcopilot.com/mcp/; a local Docker image ghcr.io/github/github-mcp-server is available for GitHub Enterprise Server or air-gapped setups. Listing: GitHub MCP Server. Setup: GitHub MCP in Claude Code.

GitLab

GitLab's built-in MCP server became generally available in GitLab 19.5 and works on Free, Premium and Ultimate. The endpoint is your instance plus /api/v4/mcp (on GitLab.com, https://gitlab.com/api/v4/mcp). An administrator must allow MCP access first, and authentication uses OAuth with the mcp scope or a fine-grained token — legacy personal access tokens are rejected (GitLab docs). Note that the GitLab MCP Server listing on mcp.so points to the old reference implementation; prefer the built-in one.

Context7

Context7 feeds current, version-specific library documentation into the prompt, which cuts down on agents inventing APIs that changed two releases ago. Remote at https://mcp.context7.com/mcp; it works without a key, but a free API key from the Context7 dashboard raises rate limits. Listing: Context7 MCP Server.

DeepWiki

Devin's DeepWiki server answers questions about any public GitHub repository with three tools: read_wiki_structure, read_wiki_contents and ask_question. It is free and needs no sign-in — the fastest way to understand an unfamiliar dependency. Add it to Claude Code with the command from the docs:

claude mcp add -s user -t http deepwiki https://mcp.deepwiki.com/mcp

The DeepWiki MCP Server listing on mcp.so is a community scraper; the official hosted URL above is the better choice.

Serena

Serena gives agents IDE-style, symbol-level tools — find a symbol, find references, edit a function body — instead of grep-and-replace. It earns its place on large codebases where text search burns tokens. It runs locally; the README asks you to install it with uv tool install -p 3.13 serena-agent and serena init, not through a marketplace. Listing: Serena MCP Server.

Browser Automation

Playwright

Microsoft's Playwright MCP drives a real browser through the accessibility tree rather than screenshots, so it is fast and deterministic. Use it for end-to-end checks, reproducing bugs and filling forms. It runs locally (npx @playwright/mcp@latest), with flags such as --headless, --isolated and --caps=vision for coordinate-based clicks. The README is explicit that it is not a security boundary, so don't point it at sites you don't trust with your logged-in profile. Listing: Playwright MCP Server. Setup: Playwright MCP in Claude Code.

The older Puppeteer MCP Server reference implementation is archived; choose Playwright for new setups.

Databases and Data

Supabase

Supabase's hosted server at https://mcp.supabase.com/mcp manages projects, runs SQL, applies migrations, reads logs and generates types. It uses OAuth, and it supports ?read_only=true and project_ref= to scope access — use both on anything with real data, since Supabase's own docs warn about prompt injection through table contents. Listing: Supabase MCP Server. Setup: Supabase MCP in Claude Code.

Postgres MCP Pro

For any other Postgres database, Postgres MCP Pro goes beyond "run a query": it checks database health, reviews query plans and recommends indexes. Its restricted access mode limits the agent to read-only transactions with a time limit, which is what you want on production. Local, via pipx install postgres-mcp or Docker. Listing: Postgres MCP Server.

dbt

The dbt MCP server exposes your models, lineage and Semantic Layer metrics, so an agent answers "what is our weekly active user count?" from the governed definition instead of guessing SQL. Run it locally with uvx dbt-mcp to also get dbt run, build and test, or use the dbt-hosted remote server for read-and-query use. Listing: dbt MCP Server.

Productivity and Project Management

  • Notion — remote at https://mcp.notion.com/mcp with OAuth; search, read and write pages and databases. Listing: Notion MCP Server.
  • Atlassian (Rovo MCP) — one remote server for Jira, Jira Service Management, Confluence, Bitbucket and more at https://mcp.atlassian.com/v2/mcp, OAuth 2.1 or API token (Atlassian docs). The v1 endpoint moves to v2 tools on March 1, 2027. The mcp.so Atlassian MCP Server listing is the popular community alternative for Data Center installs.
  • Linear — https://mcp.linear.app/mcp, with a /mcp/readonly variant and Bearer-token auth for scripts (Linear docs). The old /sse URL is deprecated. mcp.so also lists a community Linear MCP Server.
  • Asana — use the v2 endpoint https://mcp.asana.com/v2/mcp; the beta /sse server is deprecated (Asana docs).
  • Slack — Slack's official server at https://mcp.slack.com/mcp searches messages and channels, sends messages and creates canvases. The Slack MCP Server on mcp.so is a community build.

Search and Web Data

  • Exa — https://mcp.exa.ai/mcp, usable without a key at a free rate-limited tier, or with OAuth or an API key (Exa docs). Tools include web_search_exa and web_fetch_exa. Listing: Exa MCP Server.
  • Firecrawl — turns pages into clean Markdown and crawls sites; remote at https://mcp.firecrawl.dev/v2/mcp. Listing: Firecrawl MCP Server.
  • Tavily — search and extraction tuned for agents, remote at https://mcp.tavily.com/mcp/. Listing: Tavily MCP Server.
  • Apify — runs ready-made scrapers (Actors) from Apify Store, remote at https://mcp.apify.com. Listing: Apify MCP Server.

Pick one search server, not four — overlapping tools confuse tool selection (see MCP Tool Discovery).

Design

  • Figma — Figma's official server is remote at https://mcp.figma.com/mcp and available on all plans including Starter; a desktop-app server exists for Dev or Full seats on paid plans. It reads frames, variables and components for design-to-code, and can write to the canvas in beta. The mcp.so Figma MCP Server (Framelink) is the well-known community alternative that uses a personal token. Setup: Figma MCP in Claude Code.
  • Canva — create, edit and export designs through OAuth; some features need Canva Pro (Canva docs). Listing: Canva MCP Server.
  • Miro — summarize boards, build diagrams and act on comments; works on all Miro plans, including free (Miro docs). Listing: Miro MCP Server.

Observability

Sentry

Sentry's hosted server at https://mcp.sentry.dev/mcp lets an agent pull an issue, its stack trace and its events, then propose a fix in the same session. You can scope it to one organization or project by appending slugs to the URL. OAuth only, no keys. Listing: Sentry MCP Server.

Grafana

Grafana's official server searches dashboards, queries Prometheus and Loki, and reads alerts and incidents. There is no hosted endpoint: run it with uvx mcp-grafana or the grafana/mcp-grafana Docker image, set GRAFANA_URL and GRAFANA_SERVICE_ACCOUNT_TOKEN, and point it at self-hosted Grafana or Grafana Cloud. Listing: Grafana MCP Server.

AI and Machine Learning

Hugging Face runs an official hosted server at huggingface.co/mcp that searches models, datasets, Spaces, papers and docs, and can call MCP-enabled Gradio Spaces as tools. Generate your client's config from the MCP settings page instead of writing it by hand. The mcp.so Hugging Face MCP Server is an earlier community build.

Automation and Foundations

  • Zapier — the fallback for tools without an official server. Create a server at mcp.zapier.com and enable only the actions the agent needs. Listing: Zapier MCP Server.
  • Reference servers — the MCP project still maintains Filesystem, Memory and Sequential Thinking (plus Fetch, Git, Time and Everything). They run locally, are good for learning and for clients without built-in file access, and are the base for building your own.

Starter Stacks

  • Solo developer: GitHub + Context7 + Playwright + your database (Supabase or Postgres MCP Pro in restricted mode).
  • Product team: add Linear or Atlassian, Sentry and Figma.
  • Research and content: Exa or Firecrawl, Notion, DeepWiki.

Keep each client to the few servers you use every week. Every connected server adds tool descriptions to the context window, and every write-capable server widens what a prompt injection can reach — read MCP Security Best Practices before connecting anything with write access to production.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best MCP servers to start with?

For most developers: GitHub for repos and pull requests, Context7 for current library docs, Playwright for browser automation, and one database server in read-only mode. Add Linear or Atlassian, Sentry and Figma when you work in a team.

Should I use an official or a community MCP server?

Prefer the official server when the vendor offers one. It is maintained alongside the product API, usually supports OAuth and scoped permissions, and is less likely to be abandoned. Use a community server only when no official option covers your use case, and review its code and permissions first.

What is the difference between local and remote MCP servers?

A local server runs as a process on your machine, launched by your client over stdio, and usually needs an API key in its config. A remote server is hosted by the vendor at an HTTPS URL, and you connect with OAuth, so there is nothing to install or update.

How many MCP servers should I connect at once?

Keep it to the handful you use every week, often three to six. Each server adds tool descriptions to the model's context and widens what a prompt injection can reach, so disable servers you are not using.
