Overview

What is Zapier MCP Server?

Zapier MCP is Zapier's official, hosted Model Context Protocol server. It lets Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, VS Code and other MCP clients take real actions across 9,000+ apps and 40,000+ actions, such as sending messages, creating tasks and updating records, through your Zapier account.

Every client connects to one remote endpoint, https://mcp.zapier.com/api/v1/connect, over Streamable HTTP. Zapier holds the app credentials and handles OAuth and rate limiting, so your AI client never touches a third-party API key. The zapier/zapier-mcp GitHub repository distributes the Zapier MCP plugin for clients such as Claude Code, Cursor and Codex. It contains no server code to run yourself.

How to use Zapier MCP Server?

Prerequisites: a Zapier account (you can create one during sign-in) and an MCP client that supports Streamable HTTP. If your organization manages your client, an admin or owner may need to approve the Zapier connector first.

Authentication works in one of two ways:

  • OAuth (default): add Zapier in your client and sign in when prompted. Zapier creates and configures a server for that client during sign-in, auto-provisioning tools from the apps already connected to your account.
  • Connection token: for unlisted clients and your own Python or TypeScript code. Create a server at mcp.zapier.com, generate a token, and send it as Authorization: Bearer YOUR_CONNECTION_TOKEN. Treat the token like a password.

Claude Code

claude mcp add --transport http "Zapier-MCP" https://mcp.zapier.com/api/v1/connect

Restart Claude Code and complete the Zapier authorization in your browser. Zapier also publishes a Claude Code plugin: /plugin install zapier@claude-plugins-official, or /plugin marketplace add zapier/zapier-mcp followed by /plugin install zapier@zapier-plugins.

Claude (web and Desktop)

Ask Claude to connect to Zapier MCP, click Connect on the Zapier card, review the access request and click Allow. One connection covers Claude chat, Claude Desktop and Claude Cowork. On Team and Enterprise plans, an Owner must enable Zapier first.

Cursor

Install the Zapier plugin from the Cursor marketplace (or use the plugin your team distributed), open an Agent chat, and sign in when prompted. Update Cursor first, because some versions have an OAuth issue that blocks sign-in.

VS Code

Run MCP: Open User Configuration and add:

{
  "servers": {
    "Zapier": {
      "url": "https://mcp.zapier.com/api/v1/connect"
    }
  }
}

Authenticate with your Zapier account when prompted. VS Code uses MCP through GitHub Copilot in Agent mode.

Zapier's docs also cover ChatGPT, Codex, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot CLI and others.

Key features of Zapier MCP Server

  • Official and hosted by Zapier: no local server, no per-app API keys.
  • 9,000+ app integrations and 40,000+ actions, including Gmail, Google Sheets, Google Calendar, Slack, Jira, Asana, GitHub and HubSpot.
  • Agentic mode by default: the AI discovers and enables the actions it needs mid-conversation. Managed mode gives you a fixed toolset.
  • Auto-provisioning from your existing Zapier app connections.
  • Skills: reusable, Markdown-based workflow instructions saved on your server.
  • Workspace-level access controls, user permissions and audit history. Zapier is SOC 2 Type II certified.
  • Early-access workflow tools for building Next Gen Zaps from conversation (paid plans).

Zapier MCP Server tools

In agentic mode, each server exposes 16 meta-tools regardless of which apps you connect:

  • Action management: discover_zapier_actions searches apps and actions, enable_zapier_action and disable_zapier_action turn actions into tools or remove them, inspect_zapier_actions lists what is enabled, and auto_provision_mcp sets up tools from your app connections.
  • Execution: execute_zapier_read_action (find an email, look up a contact) and execute_zapier_write_action (send a message, create a record).
  • App connections and configuration: list_zapier_connections, manage_zapier_connections and get_configuration_url.
  • Skills and feedback: list_zapier_skills, get_zapier_skill, create_zapier_skill, update_zapier_skill, delete_zapier_skill and send_feedback.

The live tool list depends on your account and mode, which is why this page may show no fixed tool list.

Use cases of Zapier MCP Server

  • Cross-app follow-ups: "Add this meeting to my calendar and notify the team in Slack."
  • Inbox to task list: "Create a task in Asana for each unread email from clients."
  • CRM lookups from chat: "Find this contact in HubSpot, then email them the proposal through Gmail."
  • Coding assistants in your stack: create GitHub issues or post status updates from Cursor or VS Code without leaving the editor.
  • Data entry: "Add a row to the Leads sheet in Google Sheets with these details."
  • Repeatable workflows: save a multi-step routine as a skill, or describe an automation and have the AI build a Zap (early access).

Zapier MCP Server vs alternatives

Zapier MCP is a single connector to thousands of apps, which suits mixed-tool workflows where no dedicated MCP server exists. When a vendor offers its own server, such as the GitHub MCP Server or Slack MCP Server, that server usually exposes deeper app-specific functionality. If you prefer self-hosted workflow automation, see the n8n MCP Server.

Troubleshooting Zapier MCP Server

  • Client cannot connect: Zapier MCP supports Streamable HTTP only. SSE-only clients cannot connect, and old SSE endpoint configs must be updated to https://mcp.zapier.com/api/v1/connect.
  • Sign-in never completes in Cursor: some Cursor versions have an RFC 9728 OAuth issue. Update to the latest version. On WSL, OAuth callbacks may not reach Claude Code, so run it from a native Windows or macOS terminal.
  • Zapier tools do not appear in Claude Desktop: close and reopen the app to force a sync.
  • Tool calls start failing: you may have hit your plan's task limit. The error says so explicitly. Calls resume when your billing cycle resets, when you upgrade, or with pay-per-task billing.
  • Connector missing in a managed client: an admin or owner must approve or roll out Zapier for your organization.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is Zapier MCP official?

Yes. Zapier builds and hosts it, documents it at docs.zapier.com/mcp, and publishes the client plugins in the zapier/zapier-mcp GitHub repository.

2

Is Zapier MCP free?

Zapier MCP runs on your existing Zapier plan with no separate MCP billing. Each successful tool call uses two tasks from your plan's allowance, and failed calls, listing tools and setup are not charged.

3

Do I need an API key?

No API key for each app. Most clients sign in with OAuth. Unlisted clients and custom code use a Zapier connection token instead.

4

Is Zapier MCP remote or local?

Remote. Every client connects to `https://mcp.zapier.com/api/v1/connect`, and there is no server software to run on your machine.

5

Does Zapier MCP work with Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code?

Yes. Zapier documents Claude Code (a `claude mcp add` command or the plugin), Cursor (marketplace plugin) and VS Code (a server entry in your MCP config), plus Claude, ChatGPT, Codex and more.

6

Which apps can Zapier MCP connect to?

Any of the 9,000+ apps in Zapier's directory, with over 40,000 actions. Each enabled action becomes a tool your AI can call through your own app connections.

7

How secure is Zapier MCP?

Zapier stores app credentials so the AI client never sees them, applies workspace access controls and audit history, and is SOC 2 Type II certified. Keep any connection token private and give each user their own server.

8

Can I use one Zapier MCP server for several clients?

Each MCP client gets its own server, for example one for Claude and one for Cursor. Cursor and Grok Bot are the exception and share one connection.
