Claude Notification Server is a macOS-focused MCP server that lets Claude Desktop or any MCP client trigger sound and visual notifications through a single task_status tool. It plays macOS system sounds and delivers visual alerts using terminal-notifier, AppleScript, PyObjC, or pync fallbacks.

How to use Claude Notification Server?

Install the package with pip install notifications-mcp-server. Optionally install visual dependencies with pip install "notifications-mcp-server[visual]" and (for terminal-notifier) run brew install terminal-notifier. Configure Claude Desktop to run the console script claude-notifications. Customize behavior with environment variables CLAUDE_START_SOUND, CLAUDE_COMPLETE_SOUND, CLAUDE_VISUAL_NOTIFICATIONS, and CLAUDE_NOTIFICATION_ICON.

How do I install optional visual notification dependencies?

Run `pip install "notifications-mcp-server[visual]"` for PyObjC, or `pip install "notifications-mcp-server[pync]"` for pync. For terminal-notifier, install via Homebrew with `brew install terminal-notifier`.

Can I customize the notification sounds?

Yes. Set the `CLAUDE_START_SOUND` and `CLAUDE_COMPLETE_SOUND` environment variables to the path of any `.aiff` or `.wav` file. If not set, default macOS system sounds are used.

When do notifications actually trigger?

Notifications only fire when an MCP client or model calls the `task_status` tool. The server is not an automatic completion detector.

What command do I use in Claude Desktop configuration?

Use `"command": "claude-notifications"`. This is the console script installed by the Python package.
