What does this server do vs the full CData MCP Server for SFTP?
This project is a read-only MCP server. For full read, write, update, delete, and action capabilities, CData offers a separate free beta MCP Server for SFTP.

The SFTP MCP Server by CData is a read-only Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that allows LLMs like Claude Desktop to query live SFTP data using natural language. It wraps the CData JDBC Driver for SFTP, which exposes SFTP files as relational SQL models, so no SQL is required from the user.
Clone the repository, build with mvn clean install, install and license the CData JDBC Driver for SFTP, generate a JDBC connection string using the driver’s utility, create a .prp file with connection properties, then configure the server in Claude Desktop’s claude_desktop_config.json. The server runs via java -jar CDataMCP-jar-with-dependencies.jar <path/to/prp>.

You need Java (to run the JAR), Maven (to build), and the CData JDBC Driver for SFTP installed and licensed.
The data resides on the remote SFTP server. The CData JDBC Driver connects to that server using the connection string you configure, which may include OAuth or other authentication methods.
The server uses stdio transport, so it must be run on the same machine as the MCP client (e.g., Claude Desktop). You cannot connect to it over a network.
Authentication is handled by the CData JDBC Driver and can be configured in the JDBC connection string (e.g., OAuth, password, key-based). The driver provides a utility to build the connection string.
