Overview

What is Nagios MCP?

Nagios MCP is an MCP server for Nagios Core that integrates with the Nagios Core web‑client via its CGI binaries (statusjson.cgi and objectjson.cgi) to provide status and configuration tooling.

How to use Nagios MCP?

Install the nagios-mcp package using pip or uv. Create a YAML or JSON config file with your Nagios URL, username, and password. Start the server via uvx nagios-mcp --config (default STDIO transport) or optionally with --transport sse. Configure the server in MCP clients such as Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf, Cline, or 5ire by adding the appropriate command or SSE URL.

Key features of Nagios MCP

  • Retrieves host and service status from Nagios Core.
  • Fetches program status and overall health summary.
  • Lists host/service group status and configurations.
  • Retrieves unhandled problems, alerts, and downtimes.
  • Provides object configuration and dependency details.

Use cases of Nagios MCP

  • Monitor live host and service statuses via MCP clients.
  • Pull current alerts and unhandled problems for triage.
  • Query host and service group configurations and dependencies.
  • Retrieve downtimes and comments for maintenance planning.
  • Generate an overall health summary of the Nagios environment.

Frequently asked questions

1

What does Nagios MCP require to run?

Python, an MCP client, and a running Nagios Core web‑client with CGI binaries (`statusjson.cgi` and `objectjson.cgi`) accessible. The server uses the `uv` or `pip` installer.

Create a `nagios_config.yaml` or `nagios_config.json` file with `nagios_url`, `nagios_user`, and `nagios_pass` fields.

4

Are there any known limitations?

Currently all tools use GET requests. POST‑based tools will be added in future updates.

5

Which MCP clients are supported?

Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf, Cline, and 5ire are explicitly documented with setup instructions.
