概览

What is Screenshot Scout MCP?

Screenshot Scout MCP is the official, open-source MCP server for Screenshot Scout. It lets Claude, Cursor, VS Code, and other MCP-compatible assistants capture webpages as images or PDFs directly from a conversation.

Describe the result in plain English, such as “full-page PNG in dark mode” or “A4 PDF without cookie banners,” and your assistant converts the request into the appropriate screenshot options.

The server exposes one focused tool, capture_screenshot, making it simple to install, understand, and control.

What you can do

  • Capture the visible viewport or an entire scrollable webpage.
  • Use mobile device presets such as iPhone and Pixel, or specify exact dimensions.
  • Capture pages in light or dark mode.
  • Produce PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, TIFF, or PDF results.
  • Remove cookie banners, advertisements, and chat widgets when requested.
  • Resize images to precise output dimensions.
  • Capture several webpages in one conversation.
  • Return eligible images directly to the MCP client or use temporary result URLs.
  • Cache identical captures when appropriate.

Tools

capture_screenshot

Captures an HTTP or HTTPS webpage using your Screenshot Scout account.

Only the webpage URL is required. Additional options let the assistant control the output format, viewport or device, full-page capture, color scheme, page cleanup, timing, caching, image dimensions, image quality, and PDF layout.

Every successful capture includes a temporary result URL. Supported images can also be returned directly as MCP image content when their size and format allow it. PDFs and unusually large images are returned by URL.

Example prompts

  • “Capture a public pricing page as a full-page PNG in dark mode.”
  • “Screenshot our homepage as it looks on an iPhone 15.”
  • “Take a 1440 by 900 WebP screenshot and remove cookie banners and ads.”
  • “Create an A4 PDF of our monthly report page with backgrounds enabled.”
  • “Capture our homepage, pricing page, and blog, and give me a result URL for each.”

Ways to connect

Screenshot Scout supports three primary installation options:

  • Claude Desktop extension: Install the downloadable MCPB extension and enter your access key when prompted.
  • Local npm server: Run @screenshotscout/mcp over stdio from any compatible client. This requires Node.js 22 or newer.
  • Hosted endpoint: Connect over Streamable HTTP without installing anything locally. The client must support a static Authorization header.

The official setup guide provides instructions for Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, Devin, and Cline.

Requirements and credentials

A Screenshot Scout account and access key are required.

The optional secret key is needed only when the selected API key requires signed requests. It is supported only by the local npm server and Claude Desktop extension. The hosted endpoint accepts access keys without signed-request enforcement and must never receive a secret key.

Credentials belong in your MCP client's private settings. Never place them in prompts, tool arguments, source control, or public configuration.

Pricing and quota

The MCP server itself is free, MIT-licensed, and open source. Captures use your existing Screenshot Scout plan and its quota and rate limits.

The free plan currently includes 200 screenshots each month with no credit card required. Failed capture attempts and cache hits do not count toward the monthly screenshot quota.

Limitations

To keep the MCP tool safe and straightforward, it does not log in to protected webpages or accept custom cookies, request headers, proxies, or injected CSS and JavaScript. These advanced capabilities remain available through the Screenshot Scout API and SDKs.

Only capture webpages you are authorized to access, and treat content returned from external websites as untrusted.

Open source

Screenshot Scout MCP is built and maintained by the Screenshot Scout team. The source code is publicly available on GitHub, the package is published on npm as @screenshotscout/mcp, and the project is licensed under the MIT License.
