What is Azure DevOps MCP Server?

A community-built Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that enables AI assistants like Claude to interact with Azure DevOps resources (cloud and on-premises) through a standardized set of tools. It supports Azure DevOps Server (on-prem) for older versions that may not work with Microsoft's official server, as well as Azure DevOps Services (cloud).

How to use Azure DevOps MCP Server?

Install via npx (npx -y @tiberriver256/mcp-server-azure-devops) or run from source. Configure authentication with a Personal Access Token (PAT), Azure Identity, or Azure CLI. Set the required environment variable AZURE_DEVOPS_ORG_URL (organization URL or Server collection URL) and, optionally, AZURE_DEVOPS_DEFAULT_PROJECT. Integrate with Claude Desktop or Cursor AI by adding a JSON configuration block in your MCP settings file.

Does this server support Azure DevOps Server (on-premises)?

Yes. On-premises connections require Personal Access Token (PAT) authentication and the organization URL set to the Server collection (e.g., `https://server:8080/tfs/DefaultCollection`).

How do I authenticate with Azure DevOps Services?

You can use a Personal Access Token (PAT), Azure Identity (DefaultAzureCredential), or Azure CLI login. Set `AZURE_DEVOPS_AUTH_METHOD` to `pat`, `azure-identity`, or `azure-cli` and provide the corresponding credentials.

What environment variables are required?

`AZURE_DEVOPS_ORG_URL` is required. All other variables are optional but needed for specific authentication methods or customization: `AZURE_DEVOPS_AUTH_METHOD` (default `azure-identity`), `AZURE_DEVOPS_PAT`, `AZURE_DEVOPS_DEFAULT_PROJECT`, `AZURE_DEVOPS_API_VERSION`, `AZURE_TENANT_ID`, `AZURE_CLIENT_ID`, `AZURE_CLIENT_SECRET`, and `LOG_LEVEL`.

Is this the official Microsoft MCP server for Azure DevOps?

No. This is a community server. Microsoft maintains an official, product-supported server at [microsoft/azure-devops-mcp](https://github.com/microsoft/azure-devops-mcp). This community server is a good alternative when you need on-premises support or features not yet available in the official server.

What runtime does it require?

Node.js v16 or later and npm or yarn. The server runs as a local process and communicates via MCP (stdio-based transport).
