Overview

What is Zenfinance MCP Server?

Zenfinance MCP Server is the hosted MCP endpoint of Zenfinance, a household finance app for couples and families. It gives Claude, ChatGPT or any MCP-capable assistant a persistent memory of your household's transactions, categories, budgets and monthly reviews.

Zenfinance describes itself as "a financial brain for families". Instead of re-explaining your finances in every chat, you connect your assistant to the Zenfinance MCP server once, and it can read and update the same shared household record each time you talk to it. The product was built by a CFA, and its website also offers a free 30-second household financial checkup that projects whether your savings will last through retirement.

How to use Zenfinance MCP Server?

The Zenfinance MCP server is a remote server reached over Streamable HTTP at:

https://mcp.zenfin.tech/mcp

There is nothing to install. The server uses per-user OAuth: when you first connect, your client opens a browser window where you sign in to your Zenfinance account (or create one at zenfin.tech) and approve access. No API key is needed.

Claude Code

claude mcp add --transport http zenfinance https://mcp.zenfin.tech/mcp

Then run /mcp inside Claude Code and choose the server to complete the browser sign-in.

Claude Desktop and claude.ai

Open Settings > Connectors > Add custom connector, enter a name such as Zenfinance and the URL https://mcp.zenfin.tech/mcp, then click Connect and sign in to Zenfinance in the browser window that opens.

Cursor

Add the server to ~/.cursor/mcp.json (or a project's .cursor/mcp.json):

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "zenfinance": {
      "url": "https://mcp.zenfin.tech/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Cursor prompts you to authenticate the first time the server starts.

VS Code

Add it to your user mcp.json or a workspace .vscode/mcp.json:

{
  "servers": {
    "zenfinance": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://mcp.zenfin.tech/mcp"
    }
  }
}

VS Code opens the sign-in flow when the server starts.

Key features of Zenfinance MCP Server

  • Persistent household context: your assistant works from one stored record of your household's finances instead of whatever you paste into a single chat.
  • Shared organizations: a household is a shared space, so partners can work from the same numbers and decide together.
  • Transaction capture and categories: add transactions through conversation and organize them into categories.
  • Budgets: set and review budgets against what was actually spent.
  • Monthly reviews: run a regular review of where money went during the month.
  • Correction tools: fix miscategorized or wrong entries instead of starting over.
  • Per-user OAuth with data isolation: according to the publisher, each user signs in separately and data is isolated at the row level.
  • Works across assistants: listed as supporting Claude, ChatGPT and other MCP-capable clients.

Use cases of Zenfinance MCP Server

  • Logging spending as it happens: "Add today's $84 grocery run and the $32 pharmacy purchase to our household."
  • Monthly money review: "Walk us through where our money went in September and what was over budget."
  • Setting a budget together: "Help us set a dining-out budget for next month based on the last three months."
  • Cleaning up records: "That $120 charge was a gift, not shopping. Move it to the right category."
  • Couples' check-ins: both partners connect their assistants to the same household and review the same figures before a money conversation.

Troubleshooting Zenfinance MCP Server

  • Client says the server needs authentication: this is expected. Finish the browser sign-in (in Claude Code, run /mcp and select zenfinance). If you do not have an account yet, create one on zenfin.tech first.
  • The sign-in window does not open: make sure your client supports remote MCP servers with OAuth; older clients may only support local stdio servers.
  • Your assistant does not see your data: check that you signed in with the same Zenfinance account that owns the household, and that you are working in the right shared household.
  • Opening the URL in a browser shows an error: https://mcp.zenfin.tech/mcp is an MCP endpoint for clients, not a web page.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is the Zenfinance MCP server official?

Yes. It is published by Zenfinance (tech.zenfin) in the official MCP Registry, and it is hosted on Zenfinance's own domain.

2

Do I need an API key for Zenfinance MCP?

No. The server uses OAuth: you sign in with your Zenfinance account in the browser when your client first connects.

3

Which AI clients work with the Zenfinance MCP server?

Zenfinance lists Claude, ChatGPT and other MCP-capable clients. Any client that supports remote Streamable HTTP servers with OAuth, such as Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor and VS Code, can connect to the URL.

4

Is Zenfinance a bank or financial advisor?

No. Zenfinance states that it stores user-provided household finance records and does not act as a bank, broker, tax preparer or licensed advisor. It supports organizing, budgeting, education and review under your control.

5

Is my household data kept separate from other users?

The publisher describes the server as using per-user OAuth (via Supabase) with row-level data isolation, so each signed-in user only reaches their own records.

6

Does Zenfinance connect to my bank account?

Zenfinance's published description covers transaction capture and records you provide; it does not describe bank syncing. Check zenfin.tech for current features before relying on it.

7

What is the Zenfinance remote MCP server?

The Zenfinance remote MCP server is a hosted Model Context Protocol endpoint at https://mcp.zenfin.tech/mcp, so AI assistants can connect to it without installing or running anything locally.

8

How do I connect to the Zenfinance MCP server?

Add the endpoint https://mcp.zenfin.tech/mcp to any MCP-compatible client such as Claude Code, Cursor, or VS Code. The setup snippets on this page configure each client in one step.

9

Does the Zenfinance MCP server require authentication?

Yes. Zenfinance uses OAuth: the first time you connect, your MCP client opens a browser window to sign in and authorize access, then reuses the credentials for future sessions.

10

Which transport does the Zenfinance MCP server use?

Zenfinance exposes a streamable-http endpoint, the transport used by remote MCP servers and supported by all major MCP clients.
