About Wolfram MCP Server

Wolfram Cloud MCP is Wolfram's free hosted MCP endpoint. It lets MCP clients such as Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor query Wolfram|Alpha, run Wolfram Language code in a cloud kernel and retrieve Wolfram reference material, with no install and no sign-in.

Uses semantic search to retrieve any relevant information from Wolfram. Always use this tool at the start of new conversations or if the topic changes to ensure you have up-to-date relevant information. This uses semantic search, so the context argument should be written in natural language (not a search query) and contain as much detail as possible (up to 250 words).

Evaluates Wolfram Language code for the user in a Wolfram Language kernel. If a formatted result is provided as a markdown link, use that in your response instead of typing out the output. Parse natural language input with `\[FreeformPrompt]["query"]`, which is analogous to ctrl+= input in notebooks. Natural language input is parsed before evaluation, so it works like macro expansion. You should ALWAYS use this natural language input to obtain things like `Quantity`, `DateObject`, `Entity`, etc. This is a stateless kernel, so you cannot reuse definitions from previous evaluations.

Use natural language queries with Wolfram|Alpha to get up-to-date computational results about entities in chemistry, physics, geography, history, art, astronomy, and more.

Overview

What is Wolfram MCP Server?

Wolfram MCP Server (Wolfram Cloud MCP) is Wolfram's free hosted MCP endpoint at https://agenttools.wolfram.com/mcp, giving AI assistants Wolfram|Alpha answers, Wolfram Language evaluation and Wolfram knowledge with no install or sign-in.

It is one of three Wolfram MCP options. The Cloud MCP described here is the lightweight remote one, aimed at chat clients like Claude and ChatGPT. Wolfram Local MCP connects AI coding tools to Wolfram software you have installed, and Wolfram Enterprise MCP covers organizational deployments.

How to use Wolfram MCP Server?

You need an MCP client that supports remote Streamable HTTP servers and an internet connection. There is no API key, account or local software to set up for this endpoint.

Server URL:

https://agenttools.wolfram.com/mcp

Claude Code

claude mcp add --transport http wolfram https://agenttools.wolfram.com/mcp

Claude Desktop and claude.ai

Wolfram is listed in Claude's connector directory: in Claude Desktop, go to Customize → Connectors, search for Wolfram, click +, and make sure all Wolfram tools are enabled. On the web, open claude.ai/directory/connectors/wolfram and click Connect. You can also add it manually under Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector by pasting the server URL.

Cursor

Go to Tools & MCP → New MCP Server, or edit ~/.cursor/mcp.json:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "Wolfram": {
      "url": "https://agenttools.wolfram.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}

VS Code

Add the server to .vscode/mcp.json:

{
  "servers": {
    "wolfram": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://agenttools.wolfram.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Wolfram's support article also covers ChatGPT (the Wolfram app), Cline, Continue, OpenCode, Windsurf, Zed and Antigravity. Clients without native remote support can use npx mcp-remote https://agenttools.wolfram.com/mcp.

Key features of Wolfram MCP Server

  • Hosted by Wolfram and free to use; Wolfram says no extra subscription is needed at this time.
  • No authentication: the endpoint is open to anonymous MCP clients.
  • Wolfram|Alpha natural-language queries for up-to-date computational answers in chemistry, physics, geography, history, astronomy and more.
  • A Wolfram Language kernel for exact maths, symbolic computation, units (Quantity), dates and entities.
  • Semantic search over Wolfram material, so the model can ground its answers before computing.
  • Works in Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other MCP clients over Streamable HTTP.

Wolfram MCP Server tools

The probe of the endpoint returned three tools:

  • WolframContext: semantic search over Wolfram information. The tool description tells the model to call it at the start of a conversation, or when the topic changes, with a detailed natural-language context of up to 250 words.
  • WolframLanguageEvaluator: runs Wolfram Language code in a kernel. Natural language can be embedded with \[FreeformPrompt]["query"], which works like ctrl+= input in notebooks. Formatted results may come back as Markdown links.
  • WolframAlpha: sends natural-language queries to Wolfram|Alpha for computed facts about entities and quantities.

Use cases of Wolfram MCP Server

  • Exact maths: "Solve x^3 - 6x^2 + 11x - 6 = 0 and factor the polynomial."
  • Unit-aware science: "How long does light take to travel from the Sun to Mars at its average distance?"
  • Data lookups: "Compare the populations and GDP of Japan and Germany."
  • Plots and symbolic work: "Plot sin(x)/x from -20 to 20 and give its integral over the real line."
  • Checking a model's arithmetic or a derivation in a chat before relying on it.

Troubleshooting Wolfram MCP Server

  • Earlier results are not remembered. The Cloud MCP does not support sessions; each request is independent, so put everything a computation needs into one call.
  • File upload or download fails. The hosted service does not support file upload or download. For local files, Wolfram points to Wolfram Local MCP.
  • Tools are missing in Claude. After connecting, check that all Wolfram tools are enabled in the connector settings.
  • The client cannot connect to remote servers. Use the mcp-remote bridge shown in Wolfram's setup examples.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is the Wolfram MCP Server official?

Yes. The endpoint `https://agenttools.wolfram.com/mcp` is run by Wolfram and documented on Wolfram's support site.

2

Is the Wolfram MCP Server free?

Wolfram describes Cloud MCP as a free service that needs no additional subscription at this time.

3

Do I need a Wolfram API key?

Not for this endpoint, which needs no authentication. Wolfram's article mentions a separate API-key endpoint for LibreChat, but the standard Cloud MCP URL needs no key.

4

What is the difference between Wolfram Cloud MCP and Wolfram Local MCP?

Cloud MCP is remote and lightweight, with single requests only and no file access. Local MCP gives AI coding tools access to Wolfram applications you have installed.

5

Does it work with Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code?

Yes. Any client that supports remote Streamable HTTP MCP servers can use the URL; the setup for each client is shown above.

6

Can the Wolfram MCP Server read my files?

No. The hosted service does not support file upload or download, so it only works on the inputs passed in each request.

7

What is the Wolfram remote MCP server?

The Wolfram remote MCP server is a hosted Model Context Protocol endpoint at https://agenttools.wolfram.com/mcp, so AI assistants can connect to it without installing or running anything locally.

8

How do I connect to the Wolfram MCP server?

Add the endpoint https://agenttools.wolfram.com/mcp to any MCP-compatible client such as Claude Code, Cursor, or VS Code. The setup snippets on this page configure each client in one step.

9

Does the Wolfram MCP server require authentication?

Authentication requirements for Wolfram have not been confirmed in this listing. Check the provider’s documentation before connecting.

10

Which transport does the Wolfram MCP server use?

Wolfram exposes a streamable-http endpoint, the transport used by remote MCP servers and supported by all major MCP clients.
