Basic information
TaxAct MCP Server is TaxAct's official hosted connector for Claude. It compares TaxAct filing costs, gives rough 2025 refund estimates, answers tax questions from TaxAct's knowledge base, lists deadlines and documents to gather, and explains tax forms. No sign-in or TaxAct account is needed.
https://mcp.taxact.com/mcpclaude mcp add taxact --transport http https://mcp.taxact.com/mcpShows exactly what it costs to file a tax return with TaxAct. Returns an itemized price breakdown with the complete cost. No hidden fees, no upsells. Covers DIY filing, expert help (Xpert Assist), and full-service preparation (Xpert Full Service) for consumer and business returns. Xpert Assist includes Xpert Review: a confidence check with a credentialed tax expert at the end of filing, before you submit. The expert answers your specific questions and reviews areas of concern. It is not a line-by-line return review or tax preparation. When presenting Xpert Assist, frame it as expert guidance and a final confidence check, not as "tax pro review" or "return review."
Provides a rough federal (and optionally state) tax refund or amount owed estimate from basic inputs. Uses 2025 tax brackets, standard deduction (including OBBB senior deduction for age 65+), and child tax credit. Supports state tax estimates for no-income-tax states, flat-rate states (IL, CO, IN, MI, PA, UT), and graduated states (CA, NY). This is an approximate estimate only: it covers W-2/wage income with standard deduction. No itemized deductions, no self-employment tax, no capital gains. Your actual result may differ. File with TaxAct for your exact number.
Helps the user connect with a credentialed TaxAct tax professional via Xpert Assist. Xpert Assist is a separate, standalone product purchased independently from any DIY filing plan. It is NOT included with or bundled into any TaxAct DIY tier. Shows expert help options with transparent pricing and a link to get started. Available for both consumer (1040) and business returns.
Returns a personalized list of tax documents and forms you need to gather before filing your tax return. Based on your income sources, deductions, and life events. Covers W-2s, 1099s, receipts, and other IRS forms. This is for DIY filers preparing their own return.
Answers tax questions using TaxAct's TY2025 tax law knowledge base. Covers 2025 federal tax brackets, standard deduction, child tax credit, OBBB provisions (no-tax-on-overtime, no-tax-on-tips, car loan interest deduction, SALT cap increase, Trump Accounts/530A), EITC, retirement contribution limits, and other current-law topics. Answers are grounded in verified IRS references, not LLM training data. No account required.
Finds where to enter specific tax information in the TaxAct interview. Search by topic, form number, or keyword (e.g., "W-2", "1099-R", "charitable contributions", "crypto", "overtime deduction"). Returns the interview breadcrumb path showing where to navigate. Covers 150+ topics across individual (1040) and business returns. No account required.
Returns key tax deadlines for the 2025 tax year (filing in 2026). Includes federal filing deadline, extension deadline, estimated tax payment dates, document mailing deadlines, and state-specific deadlines. Optionally provide a state code for state-specific dates.
Explains what a tax form is, what each box means, which boxes are most important for filing, and where to enter the data in TaxAct. Covers W-2, all common 1099 forms, 1098 forms, and other tax documents. Ask about a specific form or a general document type. Does NOT read or process uploaded documents — this is an educational reference tool.
TaxAct MCP Server is TaxAct's official hosted MCP connector that lets Claude compare TaxAct filing costs, estimate a 2025 refund, answer tax questions and list the documents you need, with no TaxAct account required.
TaxAct is US tax preparation software for individual (1040) and business returns. Its MCP server is built for planning and learning, not filing: Claude can pull TaxAct- and IRS-grounded information into a conversation, but preparing, reviewing and e-filing a return still happens in TaxAct's own software. TaxAct states that the connector is not linked to your TaxAct or other financial accounts, and that your data is not saved or used to train models.
There is nothing to install and no API key or sign-in. The server URL is:
https://mcp.taxact.com/mcp
TaxAct documents setup for Claude Desktop. Other MCP clients can connect with the same URL using their standard remote (Streamable HTTP) server format.
TaxAct's steps: open Claude Desktop, go to Settings > Connectors > Add custom connector. In the Name field type "TaxAct", paste https://mcp.taxact.com/mcp into the URL field and click Add. Start a new conversation and try "How much would it cost to file my taxes if I'm single in California?" To remove it, delete or disconnect the connector in the same Connectors settings.
claude mcp add --transport http taxact https://mcp.taxact.com/mcp
Add the server to ~/.cursor/mcp.json (or a project's .cursor/mcp.json):
{
"mcpServers": {
"taxact": {
"url": "https://mcp.taxact.com/mcp"
}
}
}
Add it to .vscode/mcp.json:
{
"servers": {
"taxact": {
"type": "http",
"url": "https://mcp.taxact.com/mcp"
}
}
}
The server exposes eight tools, which fall into three groups.
Costs and expert help. compare_filing_costs returns an itemized price breakdown for filing with TaxAct across DIY, expert help and full-service options. connect_with_expert shows how to reach a credentialed TaxAct tax professional through Xpert Assist, which is a separate product purchased on its own, not bundled into any DIY tier.
Estimates and planning. estimate_taxes gives an approximate refund or amount owed from basic inputs: W-2 wage income with the standard deduction (including the OBBB senior deduction for 65+) and the child tax credit. It also estimates state tax for no-income-tax states, flat-rate states (IL, CO, IN, MI, PA, UT) and graduated states (CA, NY). It does not handle itemized deductions, self-employment tax or capital gains. tax_document_checklist builds a personalized list of W-2s, 1099s, receipts and other forms to gather, and tax_deadlines lists federal and state dates for the 2025 tax year (filing in 2026).
Tax knowledge. ask_tax_question answers current-law questions such as brackets, standard deduction, EITC, retirement limits and OBBB provisions like no tax on tips or overtime. explain_tax_document explains what each box on a W-2, 1099 or 1098 means; it does not read uploaded documents. find_interview_topic returns the breadcrumb path to where something like "1099-R" or "crypto" is entered in TaxAct.
estimate_taxes covers only wage income with the standard deduction. Itemized deductions, self-employment tax and capital gains are not included, so file with TaxAct for an exact number.explain_tax_document is an educational reference and does not process uploaded files.Yes. TaxAct hosts it at `https://mcp.taxact.com/mcp` and documents it on taxact.com.

No. TaxAct's Terms of Service state that TaxAct does not provide tax advice. Responses are for information only, and you remain responsible for what you file.

The tools use tax year 2025 rules and deadlines (returns filed in 2026).
TaxAct documents Claude Desktop. Because it is a standard public Streamable HTTP endpoint with no sign-in, clients such as Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code can add the same URL.
The TaxAct remote MCP server is a hosted Model Context Protocol endpoint at https://mcp.taxact.com/mcp, so AI assistants can connect to it without installing or running anything locally.
Add the endpoint https://mcp.taxact.com/mcp to any MCP-compatible client such as Claude Code, Cursor, or VS Code. The setup snippets on this page configure each client in one step.
Authentication requirements for TaxAct have not been confirmed in this listing. Check the provider’s documentation before connecting.
TaxAct exposes a streamable-http endpoint, the transport used by remote MCP servers and supported by all major MCP clients.
