Overview

What is Raylight MCP Server?

Raylight MCP Server is the official hosted MCP endpoint for Raylight, letting Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other MCP clients read, edit and render motion-graphic product videos inside your open Raylight project.

Raylight is a browser-based editor for launch videos, app promos and 3D product mockups, built by Frames of Motion Inc. You lay out shots on a canvas, add animation blocks to a timeline and apply camera moves and scene effects. The Raylight MCP connects an AI assistant to that editor: the assistant reads a shot, batches its edits, renders real frames to check the result and fixes what looks wrong, while every change appears live on your canvas and can be undone like your own edits.

How to use Raylight MCP Server?

You need a Raylight account (signup is free and can be done from the consent screen the first time you connect). For editing and rendering, keep the project open in a browser tab at raylight.app; the tab can sit in the background. Listing projects and templates, reading the design guide, uploading media and checking exports work without an open tab.

The server URL is:

https://api.raylight.app/mcp

Transport is Streamable HTTP and authentication is OAuth 2.0 with PKCE. There is no key to paste: the first time your client connects, a Raylight page opens in your browser, you log in and click Approve. API keys made for Raylight's REST API are not accepted by the MCP server.

Claude Code

claude mcp add --transport http raylight https://api.raylight.app/mcp

Then run /mcp in Claude Code to complete the sign-in in your browser.

Claude Desktop and claude.ai

Open Settings > Connectors. If Raylight is in the directory, pick it there; otherwise choose Add custom connector, paste https://api.raylight.app/mcp, click Add, then Connect, and approve the Raylight sign-in.

Cursor

Add the server to ~/.cursor/mcp.json (or a project's .cursor/mcp.json); Cursor opens the Raylight sign-in when it first connects:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "raylight": {
      "url": "https://api.raylight.app/mcp"
    }
  }
}

VS Code

Add it to .vscode/mcp.json:

{
  "servers": {
    "raylight": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://api.raylight.app/mcp"
    }
  }
}

ChatGPT and Codex

Raylight documents ChatGPT too: turn on Developer mode, create a custom connector with the server URL and OAuth authentication, and approve the sign-in. Codex and other clients add a Streamable HTTP server named raylight with the same URL.

Key features of Raylight MCP Server

  • Official, hosted by Raylight; nothing to install locally.
  • OAuth 2.0 with PKCE: the client never sees your password, and tokens refresh automatically.
  • Read tools such as get_editor_status, list_projects, get_project_overview and get_shot_details let the assistant understand a project before touching it.
  • Real renders, not previews: render_stills, render_filmstrip and render_waveform show frames, pacing and the audio mix, and check_sync measures offsets between sounds and visual beats.
  • apply_edits applies up to 200 edits in one call: layers, animations, cameras, lights, sound and effects.
  • upload_media and start_from_template bring in your screenshots and start from official templates.
  • Only one destructive tool (discard_import_session); every edit lands in your open editor and can be undone.
  • Per-week tool call allowance by plan: Free 50, Hobby 1,000, Pro 5,000, Max unlimited. New Free and Hobby accounts also get a one-time trial bucket of 1,000 calls.

Use cases of Raylight MCP Server

  • Animate a shot: "Make the headline slide up over half a second and add a slow push-in, then render the first shot to check it."
  • Start from a template: "Here are three screenshots of my app. Start from a launch template and swap them in."
  • Sound design: "Score every cut with a deep cinematic whoosh and show me the waveform."
  • Fix pacing: "The second shot feels slow. Tighten it and render a filmstrip so I can see the pacing."
  • Keep a project consistent: "Match the colors and fonts of the first shot across the whole project."

Troubleshooting Raylight MCP Server

  • Edits or renders time out: a timeout almost always means the editor tab was closed or the laptop went to sleep. Reopen the project at raylight.app and retry.
  • The assistant says no editor is connected: ask it to call list_projects and open the editUrl it returns before asking for edits.
  • An API key is rejected: the MCP server only accepts OAuth; remove the key and complete the browser sign-in.
  • Calls stop working mid-week: you may have reached your plan's weekly allowance. Over the cap, calls draw two credits each from your credit balance, and a credit pack unblocks you immediately.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is the Raylight MCP Server official?

Yes. It is run by Raylight (Frames of Motion Inc.) at `https://api.raylight.app/mcp` and documented on raylight.app.

2

Is Raylight MCP free?

A free Raylight account includes 50 tool calls per week, and new Free and Hobby accounts start with a one-time trial bucket of 1,000 calls. Hobby, Pro and Max plans raise the weekly allowance.

3

Do I need an API key?

No. The server uses OAuth sign-in in the browser. REST API keys are not accepted on the MCP server.

4

Does it work with Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code?

Yes. Raylight lists Claude (web, desktop, mobile and Claude Code), ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor and any other MCP client that supports Streamable HTTP and OAuth.

5

Why does my project need to stay open?

Every edit and render runs through your live editor tab, which is how changes appear on your canvas as they happen. The tab can be in the background but must stay open.

6

Can the assistant publish my video?

No. Exports and share links are made from Raylight. The assistant can list your exported videos and customize share pages, but it cannot publish anything publicly on its own.

7

What is the Raylight remote MCP server?

The Raylight remote MCP server is a hosted Model Context Protocol endpoint at https://api.raylight.app/mcp, so AI assistants can connect to it without installing or running anything locally.

8

How do I connect to the Raylight MCP server?

Add the endpoint https://api.raylight.app/mcp to any MCP-compatible client such as Claude Code, Cursor, or VS Code. The setup snippets on this page configure each client in one step.

9

Does the Raylight MCP server require authentication?

Yes. Raylight uses OAuth: the first time you connect, your MCP client opens a browser window to sign in and authorize access, then reuses the credentials for future sessions.

10

Which transport does the Raylight MCP server use?

Raylight exposes a streamable-http endpoint, the transport used by remote MCP servers and supported by all major MCP clients.
