About NPILayer MCP Server

Healthcare provider data for AI assistants, from the official CMS NPPES dataset (updated weekly). Look up any NPI (active or deactivated), search providers and organizations by name, city, state, ZIP, taxonomy code or plain-language specialty ("cardiology"), and find providers within a radius of a ZIP code or coordinates, sorted by distance. Tools: lookup_npi, search_providers, providers_near. NPI lookup and search work without an account (rate-limited). Sign in with OAuth or use an NPILayer API key (Authorization: Bearer) for radius search and higher limits. Provider information is based on publicly available NPPES data. An NPI does not indicate licensure, credentialing, network participation, or current practice status.

Overview

What is NPILayer?

NPILayer is a remote MCP server that gives AI assistants deterministic U.S. healthcare provider data from the official CMS NPPES dataset, updated weekly. Ask your assistant to look up an NPI, find providers by name or specialty, or list providers near a ZIP code, and it answers from real NPPES records instead of guessing.

Tools

ToolWhat it does
lookup_npiLook up one provider or organization by 10-digit NPI: name, credential, status (active/deactivated), primary taxonomy, practice address
search_providersSearch by name, organization, city, state, ZIP, NUCC taxonomy code, or plain-language specialty ("cardiology")
providers_nearProviders within a radius of a ZIP code or lat/lng, sorted by distance

All tools are read-only.

Example prompts

  • "Look up NPI 1053462200."
  • "Find cardiologists within 25 miles of ZIP 49684."
  • "Search for pediatric dentists in Grand Rapids, MI."
  • "Is this NPI active, and what is the provider's primary specialty?"

Connect

Endpoint: https://npilayer.com/mcp (Streamable HTTP)

  • Claude Code: claude mcp add --transport http npilayer https://npilayer.com/mcp
  • Claude, ChatGPT and other clients with connectors: add a custom connector with the URL above and sign in with your NPILayer account when prompted (OAuth).
  • With an API key: send Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY.

Access and limits

  • lookup_npi and search_providers work without an account (rate-limited per IP).
  • providers_near and higher limits need a free NPILayer account (OAuth sign-in or API key).
  • Free plan: 1,000 requests/month. Paid plans start at $29/month. See https://npilayer.com/pricing/

About the data

Geographic search uses ZIP-code centroids, so distances are approximate. Provider information is based on publicly available NPPES data. An NPI does not indicate licensure, credentialing, network participation, or current practice status.

Frequently asked questions

1

What is the NPILayer remote MCP server?

The NPILayer remote MCP server is a hosted Model Context Protocol endpoint at https://npilayer.com/mcp, so AI assistants can connect to it without installing or running anything locally.

2

How do I connect to the NPILayer MCP server?

Add the endpoint https://npilayer.com/mcp to any MCP-compatible client such as Claude Code, Cursor, or VS Code. The setup snippets on this page configure each client in one step.

3

Does the NPILayer MCP server require authentication?

Yes. NPILayer uses OAuth: the first time you connect, your MCP client opens a browser window to sign in and authorize access, then reuses the credentials for future sessions.

4

Which transport does the NPILayer MCP server use?

NPILayer exposes a Streamable HTTP endpoint, the transport used by remote MCP servers and supported by all major MCP clients.
