About Hosted Graphite MCP Server

Hosted Graphite, by MetricFire, is a managed Graphite and Grafana monitoring service. Its official MCP server lets AI assistants search and render metrics, create and mute alerts, manage notification channels and scheduled mutes, and build Grafana dashboards. It uses an MCP token with read, write or delete permissions.

Query Graphite render API for metric data or graph images. Uses the MCP token against /mcp/graphite/render on the API host.

Overview

What is Hosted Graphite MCP Server?

Hosted Graphite MCP Server is the official hosted endpoint (https://mcp.hostedgraphite.com/) from MetricFire that lets AI assistants search and render your Hosted Graphite metrics and manage alerts, mutes, notification channels and Grafana dashboards. It authenticates with an MCP token.

Hosted Graphite is MetricFire's managed monitoring service built on Graphite for metrics and Grafana for dashboards. MetricFire's docs call this the MetricFire MCP Server. It is aimed at SREs, DevOps engineers and developers who already send metrics to Hosted Graphite and want an assistant such as Claude, Cursor or GitHub Copilot to investigate metrics, tune alerting and build dashboards from plain-language requests.

How to use Hosted Graphite MCP Server?

Your metrics must already be forwarded to Hosted Graphite; the MCP server does not replace your existing collection. Then create a token:

  1. In your Hosted Graphite account, go to Add-Ons ⇒ MetricFire MCP Server.
  2. Choose the permissions the token needs: Read, Write and/or Delete. MetricFire recommends the minimum your workflow requires.
  3. Copy the token right away; the full value is shown only once.

Most clients send the token in a header:

X-HostedGraphite-MCP-Token: <MF-MCP-TOKEN>

Claude Code

claude mcp add --transport http hosted-graphite https://mcp.hostedgraphite.com/ \
  --header "X-HostedGraphite-MCP-Token: $HOSTEDGRAPHITE_MCP_TOKEN"

Claude Desktop and claude.ai

For the Claude browser and app UI, MetricFire documents a URL that embeds the token, in the form https://<MF-MCP-TOKEN>@mcp.hostedgraphite.com, entered as a custom connector URL (Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector). MetricFire recommends using a read-only token with this method unless you need write or delete access.

Cursor

{

    "hosted-graphite": {
      "url": "https://mcp.hostedgraphite.com/",
      "headers": {
        "X-HostedGraphite-MCP-Token": "<MF-MCP-TOKEN>"
      }
    }
  }
}

VS Code (GitHub Copilot)

Run MCP: Open User Configuration from the Command Palette and add, as in MetricFire's docs:

      "url": "https://mcp.hostedgraphite.com/",
      "headers": {
        "X-HostedGraphite-MCP-Token": "YOUR-MCP-TOKEN"
      }
    }
  }
}

Save, start the server from VS Code and use Copilot Chat.

Key features of Hosted Graphite MCP Server

  • Official server from MetricFire for Hosted Graphite accounts.
  • Metric discovery by Graphite-style patterns and tag expressions, plus busy and invalid metric reports.
  • Graphite render queries returning data or graph images over a chosen time range.
  • Full alert management, including composite alerts, mutes, scheduled mutes and alert history.
  • Notification channels for email, Slack, PagerDuty, webhooks, VictorOps and Opsgenie.
  • Grafana dashboard creation and editing, including dashboards built from natural-language prompts.
  • Token permissions split into Read, Write and Delete so you can limit what an agent may change.

Hosted Graphite MCP Server tools

The server exposes 35 tools in six groups:

  • Metrics: metric_search finds metrics by pattern (for example foo.bar.*), busy_metrics returns the busiest metric and its rate-limit percentage, invalid_metrics lists metrics rejected by parsers, and delete_metrics removes matching metrics.
  • Tags: list_tags, search_tag_values, find_tagged_series and delete_tagged_series work with tagged series.
  • Rendering: render_graphite queries the Graphite render API for metric data or graph images.
  • Alerts: create_alert, search_alerts, get_alert, update_alert, delete_alert, mute_alert, unmute_alert, bulk mute_alerts and unmute_alerts, get_alert_mute_status and get_alert_history.
  • Notification channels and scheduled mutes: create, search, get, update and delete tools for each, such as create_notification_channel and create_scheduled_mute.
  • Dashboards: create_dashboard, list_dashboards, get_dashboard, update_dashboard and delete_dashboard for Grafana.

Use cases of Hosted Graphite MCP Server

  • Incident triage: "Show the error-rate metrics for the checkout service over the last six hours."
  • Alert tuning: "Create an alert when api.latency.p95 stays above 500 ms for 5 minutes and send it to our Slack channel."
  • Maintenance windows: "Schedule a mute for all database alerts every Sunday from 02:00 to 04:00."
  • Dashboard building: "Build a Grafana dashboard with CPU, memory and disk panels for the prod hosts."
  • Cleanup: "List invalid metrics and the busiest metric so I can fix noisy senders."

Troubleshooting Hosted Graphite MCP Server

  • No metrics found: metrics must already be stored in Hosted Graphite before they can be searched, rendered or used in alerts.
  • Permission errors on create or delete: the token was created without Write or Delete permission. Create a new token with the permissions you need.
  • Lost token: the full token is shown only once. Generate a new one from Add-Ons ⇒ MetricFire MCP Server.
  • Heroku users cannot enable it: the MCP server is not available for accounts created through the Heroku Marketplace add-on. MetricFire asks you to contact them to migrate to a dedicated account.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is Hosted Graphite MCP Server official?

Yes. MetricFire documents it in the Hosted Graphite docs as the MetricFire MCP Server.

2

How do I authenticate?

Create an MCP token under Add-Ons ⇒ MetricFire MCP Server and send it in the `X-HostedGraphite-MCP-Token` header. For the Claude browser UI, MetricFire documents a URL with the token embedded.

3

Can the agent delete metrics or alerts?

Only if the token has Delete permission. Tokens can be limited to Read, Write and/or Delete.

4

Does it work with Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code?

Yes. MetricFire names GitHub Copilot in VS Code, Cursor and Claude/Claude Code, and the server works with any client that can send a custom header.

5

Does it manage Grafana dashboards?

Yes. Tools such as `create_dashboard` and `update_dashboard` create and edit Grafana dashboards in your account.

6

Which notification channels are supported?

The `create_notification_channel` tool supports email, Slack, PagerDuty, webhook, VictorOps and Opsgenie.

7

What is the Hosted Graphite remote MCP server?

The Hosted Graphite remote MCP server is a hosted Model Context Protocol endpoint at https://mcp.hostedgraphite.com/, so AI assistants can connect to it without installing or running anything locally.

8

How do I connect to the Hosted Graphite MCP server?

Add the endpoint https://mcp.hostedgraphite.com/ to any MCP-compatible client such as Claude Code, Cursor, or VS Code. The setup snippets on this page configure each client in one step.

9

Does the Hosted Graphite MCP server require authentication?

Yes. Hosted Graphite requires an API key — check the official documentation for how to obtain one, then include it in your client's configuration.

10

Which transport does the Hosted Graphite MCP server use?

Hosted Graphite exposes a streamable-http endpoint, the transport used by remote MCP servers and supported by all major MCP clients.
