About 9apes MCP Server

The 9apes MCP server lets an AI assistant read the GitHub Actions data 9apes already collects for your organization: runs, jobs, steps, and their durations. Ask it why a build got slower, which jobs take the longest, or how this week compares with last week. It is read-only. It cannot start, cancel, or change jobs, runners, billing, or account settings.

Overview

The 9apes MCP server lets an AI assistant read the GitHub Actions data 9apes already collects for your organization: runs, jobs, steps, and their durations. Ask it why a build got slower, which jobs take the longest, or how this week compares with last week.

It is read-only. It cannot start, cancel, or change jobs, runners, billing, or account settings.

Server URL

https://api.9apes.com/mcp

The server speaks Streamable HTTP and signs you in with OAuth in the browser. There is no API key to copy and no local process to run.

What you need

  • A 9apes account with GitHub runs flowing through it. See Quick Start if you have not moved a job yet.
  • Membership in the 9apes organization whose CI you want to analyze.
  • An MCP client that supports remote servers over HTTP with OAuth: Claude, Claude Code, Codex, or another compatible client.

Connect your client

Claude Code

claude mcp add --transport http 9apes https://api.9apes.com/mcp

Then open /mcp in Claude Code, select 9apes, and complete the browser sign-in.

Claude (web and desktop)

  1. Open Settings → Connectors and choose Add custom connector.
  2. Name it 9apes and enter https://api.9apes.com/mcp as the URL.
  3. Select Connect and complete the browser sign-in.

On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner may need to allow custom connectors first.

Codex

codex mcp add 9apes --url https://api.9apes.com/mcp
codex mcp login 9apes

Complete the browser sign-in, then check /mcp in the Codex terminal UI.

Other clients

Point any client that supports remote MCP servers with OAuth at https://api.9apes.com/mcp. The server publishes standard OAuth discovery metadata at https://api.9apes.com/.well-known/oauth-protected-resource, so clients register themselves and start the sign-in for you.

Clients and registries that support MCP Server Cards can read the endpoint and supported protocol versions from the 9apes server card. It is also listed in the site's AI catalog.

Sign in and choose an organization

The first time a client connects, your browser opens a 9apes page:

  1. Sign in to 9apes, using GitHub sign-in if you are not already signed in.
  2. Check the address the page says it will send access to. It should be the client you just connected, for example claude.ai, or 127.0.0.1 for a client on your computer.
  3. Pick one organization and select Allow read access.

The connection grants two read scopes:

ScopeAllows
runners:readThe connected organization, your identity, and the GitHub App connection status
analytics:readRun, job, and step analytics

One organization per connection: A connection is bound to the organization you picked, and every call rechecks that you are still a member. To analyze a different organization, add a second connection and pick that organization during sign-in.

To disconnect, remove the server or connector in your client. Removing your membership in the organization also stops access on the next call.

Check the connection

Ask your assistant:

Use 9apes to show which organization I'm connected to.

It should call 9apes_get_context and name your organization. If it doesn't, see Troubleshooting.

Things to ask

  • "Which five jobs had the highest P95 duration on main over the last 7 days?"
  • "Compare run durations for the backend repository this week against last week."
  • "Why was run 1234567890 slow? Break it down by job and step."
  • "Write a CI performance summary for my engineering lead covering the last 30 days."

The agent skill teaches an assistant how to turn these into precise tool calls and well-sourced reports.

Troubleshooting

  • The browser page says "Authorization expired". Restart the connection from your client; each sign-in link is valid for 10 minutes.
  • You see the wrong organization, or none. You may have picked a different organization during sign-in, or you may not be a member of an active organization. Reconnect and pick again.
  • Tools return empty results. Check the time window and filters first. The server only sees runs 9apes received from GitHub; it cannot see jobs that ran on other runners.
  • Claude web cannot connect. Custom connectors may be disabled for your Claude organization; ask an owner to allow them.

For anything else, email support@9apes.com.

  • Tools reference: Every tool, its inputs, limits, and how to read the results.
  • Agent skill: Install the 9apes-ci skill so assistants use the tools well.

Frequently asked questions

1

What is the 9apes remote MCP server?

The 9apes remote MCP server is a hosted Model Context Protocol endpoint at https://api.9apes.com/mcp, so AI assistants can connect to it without installing or running anything locally.

2

How do I connect to the 9apes MCP server?

Add the endpoint https://api.9apes.com/mcp to any MCP-compatible client such as Claude Code, Cursor, or VS Code. The setup snippets on this page configure each client in one step.

3

Does the 9apes MCP server require authentication?

Yes. 9apes uses OAuth: the first time you connect, your MCP client opens a browser window to sign in and authorize access, then reuses the credentials for future sessions.

4

Which transport does the 9apes MCP server use?

9apes exposes a Streamable HTTP endpoint, the transport used by remote MCP servers and supported by all major MCP clients.
