Overview

What is Todoist MCP Server?

This Todoist MCP server is a small, community-built MCP server by abhiz123 that connects Claude to your Todoist account. You can create, list, update, complete and delete tasks in plain English, authenticated with a Todoist API token.

It runs locally through Node.js, published on npm as @abhiz123/todoist-mcp-server, and exposes five task tools. It is MIT-licensed and not made by Doist, the company behind Todoist. Doist publishes its own official Todoist MCP server with a hosted endpoint, compared below. The community repository was last updated in April 2025.

How to use Todoist MCP Server?

Prerequisites: Node.js (for npx/npm), an MCP client, and a Todoist API token.

Get your Todoist API token:

  1. Log in to Todoist.
  2. Go to Settings > Integrations.
  3. Copy your API token from the "Developer" section.

The token goes in the TODOIST_API_TOKEN environment variable. Anyone holding it can act on your Todoist account, so keep it out of shared or committed config files.

Claude Desktop

Add this to claude_desktop_config.json, then restart Claude Desktop:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "todoist": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@abhiz123/todoist-mcp-server"],
      "env": {
        "TODOIST_API_TOKEN": "your_api_token_here"
      }
    }
  }
}

You can also install it automatically for Claude Desktop through Smithery:

npx -y @smithery/cli install @abhiz123/todoist-mcp-server --client claude

Or install the package globally:

npm install -g @abhiz123/todoist-mcp-server

Other MCP clients

The README only documents Claude Desktop. Because this is a standard stdio server, clients such as Cursor or VS Code can run the same npx -y @abhiz123/todoist-mcp-server command with TODOIST_API_TOKEN set in the server's env block. For Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code, the official Doist server (below) has documented setup steps.

Build from source

git clone https://github.com/abhiz123/todoist-mcp-server.git
cd todoist-mcp-server
npm install
npm run build

Key features of Todoist MCP Server

  • Create, update, complete and delete Todoist tasks from natural-language requests.
  • Smart task search: update, complete and delete find the task by a partial name match, so you do not need task IDs.
  • Filter tasks by due date, priority or project, with natural-language date filtering and an optional result limit.
  • Task details include descriptions, due dates and priority levels 1 to 4.
  • Clear error messages and confirmations after each action.
  • Lightweight and local: one npm package and one environment variable.

Todoist MCP Server tools

The server exposes five tools, all focused on tasks:

  • Create: todoist_create_task takes a required content (title) and optional description, due date and priority.
  • Read: todoist_get_tasks retrieves tasks filtered by due date, priority or project, with an optional limit.
  • Change: todoist_update_task finds a task by partial name and changes its content, description, due date or priority.
  • Finish or remove: todoist_complete_task marks a matched task done, and todoist_delete_task deletes it.

There are no tools for projects, labels, sections or comments. Open issues on the repository request project support.

Use cases of Todoist MCP Server

  • Capture tasks mid-conversation: "Add task 'Review PR' due tomorrow at 2pm."
  • Plan your day: "List tasks due today," or "Show high priority tasks due this week."
  • Reschedule without opening the app: "Update documentation task to be due next week."
  • Reprioritize: "Change priority of bug fix task to urgent."
  • Close the loop: "Mark the PR review task as complete," or "Remove meeting prep task."
  • Turn meeting notes Claude has just summarized into individual Todoist tasks.

Todoist MCP Server vs alternatives

Doist's official Todoist MCP server is hosted at https://ai.todoist.net/mcp (Streamable HTTP) with OAuth sign-in, so no API token sits in your config. It is actively maintained and documents Claude Desktop, Claude Code (claude mcp add --transport http todoist https://ai.todoist.net/mcp), Cursor and VS Code. It can also run locally with npx @doist/todoist-mcp. Choose the official server for broader coverage and vendor support. The abhiz123 server suits a minimal, local, token-based setup for basic task management. For team project tools, see the Asana MCP Server or Trello MCP Server.

Troubleshooting Todoist MCP Server

  • Authentication errors: check that TODOIST_API_TOKEN is set in the server's env block and matches the token under Settings > Integrations > Developer.
  • The wrong task is updated: matching uses partial names, so use a more specific part of the task title when several tasks look similar.
  • todoist_get_tasks returns a 400 error: users have reported this in the repository's issues. Try a simpler filter, or consider the official Doist server, which is actively maintained.
  • Server does not appear in Claude Desktop: validate the JSON, confirm Node.js is installed so npx works, and fully restart Claude Desktop.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is this the official Todoist MCP server?

No. It is a community project by abhiz123. Doist's official server lives at [github.com/Doist/todoist-mcp](https://github.com/Doist/todoist-mcp), with a hosted endpoint at `https://ai.todoist.net/mcp`.

2

Is the Todoist MCP server free?

Yes. The code is MIT-licensed and free to run. You only need a Todoist account and its API token.

3

Which API key does it need?

A Todoist API token, passed as `TODOIST_API_TOKEN`. Find it under Settings > Integrations > Developer in Todoist.

4

Does it work with Claude Code, Cursor or VS Code?

The README only covers Claude Desktop, but any client that launches stdio servers can run the same `npx` command with the token in `env`. The official Doist server has documented setup for Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code.

5

Can it manage projects, labels or comments?

No. The five tools cover tasks only. Filtering by project is supported when listing tasks, but the server cannot create or edit projects, labels or comments.

6

Is the Todoist MCP server local or remote?

Local. It runs on your machine over stdio and calls the Todoist API with your token. The official Doist server is the remote option.

7

Is it safe to give an AI access to Todoist?

The server can create, change and delete tasks on your behalf, and the token grants full API access to your account. Keep the token private and out of shared config files.
