Overview

What is ReaperMCP?

ReaperMCP connects any MCP-compatible AI assistant to REAPER, giving it full control over music production through 153 tools across 24 modules. It runs entirely on your machine via a file-based Lua IPC bridge inside REAPER — your project, audio, and MIDI never leave your computer.

How to use ReaperMCP?

Download or clone the repository, run the installer (install.bat on Windows or bash install.sh on macOS/Linux), then load reaper_mcp_server.lua in REAPER via Actions → Show action list → Load ReaScript. Start your MCP-compatible AI client and begin giving production commands.

Key features of ReaperMCP

  • 153 tools across 24 modules (transport, tracks, MIDI, FX, etc.)
  • File-based IPC — no ports, sockets, or network exposure
  • 25 mixing/mastering style profiles (EDM, Rock, Pop, Electronic)
  • Smart plugin detection with fx_list_installed() and set_fx_preferences()
  • AI-driven composition with MIDI, patterns, and loop library
  • Tool profiles to match model capacity (full, composition, mixing, analysis, minimal)

Use cases of ReaperMCP

  • Compose an orchestral string arrangement in D minor using AI-generated MIDI
  • Apply a 25-style mixing/mastering pipeline with sidechain and bus recipes
  • Analyze track loudness, clipping, frequency spectrum, and stereo field
  • Create drum patterns and chord progressions from text descriptions
  • Scan a loop folder and build a full track by BPM, key, and role

Frequently asked questions

1

What AI clients work with ReaperMCP?

It works with any MCP-compatible client: Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, and others that support the Model Context Protocol.

2

Does ReaperMCP require REAPER to be running?

Yes. REAPER must be open with the Lua script loaded. ReaperMCP cannot launch REAPER for you.

3

How does ReaperMCP communicate with REAPER?

It uses file-based IPC: the Python server writes commands to `command.json`, and a Lua script inside REAPER polls, executes, and writes results to `response.json` — no sockets or network exposure.

4

Can I use a smaller/cheaper AI model?

Yes. Set the `REAPER_MCP_PROFILE` environment variable to choose a smaller tool subset: `composition` (109 tools), `mixing` (67), `analysis` (47), or `minimal` (40).

5

What are the runtime requirements?

Python 3.10+ and REAPER 7+. Optional `pip install 'reaper-mcp[analysis]'` for audio analysis features.
