Overview

What is Rails AI Context?

rails-ai-context is a Ruby gem that lets AI coding agents ask a Rails app about itself instead of writing from memory. 35 read-only tools answer from the app: the schema, models and associations, routes, controllers and inherited filters, views, jobs, tests and conventions. It runs as an MCP server or from any terminal, and still answers in a static tier when the app cannot boot.

Works with Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, OpenCode and Codex CLI. Other MCP clients (Claude Desktop, Windsurf, Zed, JetBrains) take the entry rails-ai-context mcp-entry prints.

How to install

In the Gemfile:

bundle add rails-ai-context --group development
bin/rails generate rails_ai_context:install --tools claude --defaults

Standalone, with no Gemfile change:

gem install rails-ai-context
rails-ai-context init --tools claude --defaults

--tools takes claude, cursor, copilot, opencode, codex or all.

Is it safe?

Every tool is read-only. Secrets, credentials and sensitive columns are kept back, and the tools run on your machine: nothing about the app is sent anywhere.
